Er gilt als Experte auf dem Gebiet der modernen <a href="Wachstumstheorie" title="Wachstumstheorie">Wachstumstheorie</a>.

<div class="mw-heading mw-heading2"><h2 id="Leben_und_Wirken">Leben und Wirken</h2></div>

<p>Ufuk Akcigit studierte an der <a href="Ko%C3%A7_%C3%9Cniversitesi" title="Koç Üniversitesi">Koç Üniversitesi</a> in <a href="Istanbul" title="Istanbul">Istanbul</a> Wirtschaftswissenschaften (Abschluss Bachelor, 2003) und erwarb 2009 am <a href="Massachusetts_Institute_of_Technology" title="Massachusetts Institute of Technology">Massachusetts Institute of Technology</a> einen <a href="Ph.D." title="Ph.D.">Ph.D.</a>, ebenfalls in Wirtschaftswissenschaften. Im selben Jahr erhielt er eine erste Professur <i>(Assistant Professor)</i> an der <a href="University_of_Pennsylvania" title="University of Pennsylvania">University of Pennsylvania</a>. 2015 ging er als <i>Assistant Professor</i> an die <a href="University_of_Chicago" title="University of Chicago">University of Chicago</a>, wo er 2018 zum <i>Associate Professor</i> und 2019 zur ordentlichen Professur aufstieg. Seit 2020 hat er an der University of Chicago eine nach <a href="Arnold_C._Harberger" class="mw-redirect" title="Arnold C. Harberger">Arnold C. Harberger</a> benannte Professur für Wirtschaftswissenschaften <i>(Economics)</i> inne.

</p><p>Akcigit betreibt Forschung mit zahlreichen anderen Institutionen. Von 2010 bis 2018 forschte er als <i>Research Fellow</i> am <a href="National_Bureau_of_Economic_Research" title="National Bureau of Economic Research">National Bureau of Economic Research</a>, seit 2018 tut er dies als <i>Research Associate</i>. Von 2016 bis 2022 kooperierte er als <i>Distinguished Research Fellow</i> mit der Koç-Universität, seit 2019 mit dem <a href="Ifo_Institut_f%C3%BCr_Wirtschaftsforschung" title="Ifo Institut für Wirtschaftsforschung">ifo Institut für Wirtschaftsforschung</a> in München, seit 2020 mit dem <i>Rimini Centre for Economic Analysis</i>, seit 2024 mit der <a href="Weltbank" title="Weltbank">Weltbank</a>.

</p><p>Akcigit erhielt 2019 den <a href="Max-Planck-Forschungspreis" title="Max-Planck-Forschungspreis">Max-Planck-Forschungspreis</a>, der mit einem Forschungsaufenthalt in Deutschland verknüpft ist. Seit 2020 geht er am <a href="Leibniz-Institut_f%C3%BCr_Wirtschaftsforschung_Halle" title="Leibniz-Institut für Wirtschaftsforschung Halle">Leibniz-Institut für Wirtschaftsforschung Halle</a> (IWH) als Leiter der Forschungsgruppe <i>Ökonomische Unterschiede zwischen Ost- und Westdeutschland</i> unter anderem der Frage nach, warum 30 Jahre nach der <a href="Deutsche_Wiedervereinigung" title="Deutsche Wiedervereinigung">Deutschen Wiedervereinigung</a> weiterhin eine wirtschaftliche Kluft zwischen Ost und West besteht.<sup id="cite_ref-:0_1-0" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-:0-1"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>1<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup>
